01

Origins

This was Ram's answer to the compact commercial van boom that Ford started in North America with the Transit Connect. It is a Fiat Doblo, built in Turkey and sold from 2015 with Ram badges, a four-cylinder petrol engine and a nine-speed automatic, in cargo and passenger forms.

Design and engineering

On paper it made sense. Fiat's ownership of Chrysler meant the van already existed and cost little to bring over, and its load bay and turning circle suited urban fleets. In practice American buyers largely stayed with the Transit Connect, and the ProMaster City sold in modest numbers before being dropped early in the 2020s without a direct replacement, leaving the larger ProMaster to carry the range.
