Origins
British Leyland needed one car to replace both the Rover P6 and the Triumph 2000, and it wanted something that would sell abroad. David Bache and Spen King answered with a five-door fastback whose nose borrowed openly from the Ferrari Daytona, with a low bonnet line, a full-width slot grille and a large glass tailgate on an executive saloon, which nobody in the class had tried.
