Origins
The first 200, launched in 1984, was a Triumph Acclaim successor by another route: a Honda Ballade saloon assembled at Longbridge with Rover badges, a Rover grille and, in the 216, Honda's 1.6-litre engine, later joined by a British 2.0-litre. It sold to buyers who wanted Japanese reliability with a British badge, and it made money.
