Royal Enfield had built its Indian business on singles, but its ambitions abroad needed something larger. The answer, launched in 2018 alongside the Continental GT 650, was a 648cc air- and oil-cooled parallel twin with a single overhead camshaft, eight valves and a 270-degree crankshaft, which gives the offbeat firing interval and character of a V-twin without the packaging problems.

The engine was developed at Royal Enfield's UK technology centre, and the chassis with input from Harris Performance, the British frame specialists the company had bought in 2015. The result is a plain, upright standard motorcycle with twin shocks, wire wheels and a round headlamp, named after the Interceptor that Royal Enfield had built for the American market in the 1960s.

What made it significant was the price. A new, warrantied, smooth-running middleweight twin cost roughly what a used one did elsewhere, and it undercut every Japanese equivalent by a wide margin without feeling like a compromise. It sold heavily in India, Britain, Europe and America, established Royal Enfield as a mainstream manufacturer outside its home market, and gave the firm a platform that has since spawned scramblers, bobbers and roadsters.
