Ducati's identity had been built on the V-twin since the 1970s, and by the middle of the 2010s that architecture had run out of room. The 1299 was about as large as a twin could sensibly be made, and in World Superbike the regulations no longer favoured it. The Panigale V4, launched in 2018, ended the argument by taking the layout from the racing department instead.

The Desmosedici Stradale is a 1103cc, liquid-cooled, 90-degree V4 with desmodromic actuation of all sixteen valves, derived closely from Ducati's MotoGP engine. It uses a counter-rotating crankshaft, which spins against the direction of the wheels to cancel some of the gyroscopic effect and make the bike change direction more willingly — a MotoGP solution transplanted almost intact. A 998cc version was offered for markets and classes where capacity is capped.

The rest of the motorcycle was built to keep up: an aluminium front frame bolted to the engine, which is used as a stressed member, a six-speed gearbox with a quickshifter and wet multi-plate clutch, and an electronics package covering cornering ABS, traction, wheelie and slide control that made the performance approachable rather than merely intimidating.

It worked. The V4 gave Ducati a superbike competitive at the top of world championship racing again after a long drought, and the road bikes have since spawned increasingly extreme variants. The twin has not disappeared from the range, but the flagship no longer belongs to it.
