Origins
Scion launched in 2003 as Toyota's answer to an uncomfortable fact — its average buyer was ageing — and the xB was the gamble that paid. A pure box on wheels, imported from Japan where it sold as the bB, it offered flat floors, upright glass, and interior space that mocked cars twice its price, all for around fourteen thousand dollars with a stereo designed for aftermarket abuse. The straight-faced weirdness worked: young buyers who could smell marketing a mile away adopted the xB as an honest object, and the customisation scene embraced it. Average buyer age plummeted, exactly as planned. The bigger, softer second generation of 2007 lost the plot and the magic, and Scion itself folded back into Toyota in 2016. The first xB remains the brand's whole argument, in one rectangle.
