2006 Scion Fuse

Origins

The Fuse concept of 2006 was Scion thinking out loud about where its youth brand might go: a wedgy sports coupé shown at New York with LED-laden bodywork, screens built into the front fascia, and a cabin conceived as a rolling entertainment system — customisation, the brand's core promise, taken to production-impossible extremes. Nothing about it was destined for the road as shown, and no production car followed directly. Its interest now is archaeological: the Fuse marks the moment Scion's experimenters were reaching for a genuine sports model, an itch eventually scratched by the FR-S in 2012. Concepts like this were also the brand working out its identity in public — louder, stranger and more confident than the cautious parent company, which was precisely the job Toyota had hired it to do.
