Origins
The Toyota 86 reached America in 2012 wearing Scion badges as the FR-S: the front-engine, rear-drive coupé Toyota had developed with Subaru, powered by a 2-litre boxer four and deliberately modest tyres. Light, affordable, and tuned for balance over grip, it was everything the brand's customisation-minded audience had asked for, and reviewers embraced it as the return of the honest sports car. For Scion it was vindication arriving late; the marque's sales had thinned, and when Toyota retired the brand in 2016 the FR-S simply became the Toyota 86, continuing unchanged. The Scion-badged cars thus bracket a neat irony — the youth division's most credible product spent most of its life wearing its parent's name, and its second generation, the GR86, remains in the family today.
