Origins

By the late 1980s Subaru was a maker of small, odd, cheap cars with a loyal but limited following. The Legacy was the response: a conventionally sized saloon and estate, engineered on an all-new platform with a new generation of boxer engines and a properly developed four-wheel-drive system, aimed squarely at buyers who would otherwise shop a Camry or an Accord. It cost Subaru a great deal to develop and it had to work.

Design and engineering

Subaru made its case with an endurance run. A team of Legacys circulated a test track for weeks to set a world record over 100,000 kilometres, an old-fashioned demonstration chosen because the car had no reputation to trade on. The Legacy also carried Subaru into the World Rally Championship, taking the marque's first WRC victory before the programme moved to the smaller Impreza, and the turbocharged RS versions sold in Japan and Europe gave the range genuine pace.

In production

The most consequential decision came in 1994. Subaru's American arm took the Legacy estate, raised the suspension, added body cladding and two-tone paint, and called it the Outback. It caught a market that wanted the reassurance of an SUV without the bulk, and it sold in numbers that transformed the company's finances. Everything Subaru has become since, from the Forester to its position in American driveways, follows from that one derivative.

Legacy

The Legacy nameplate ran to 2020 worldwide and lasted through 2025 in North America, latterly built in Lafayette, Indiana. It was quietly outlived by the crossover it invented.
