Origins

Indian small-goods transport ran on three-wheeled auto rickshaw derivatives: cheap, unstable, limited in what they could carry. The Ace of 2005 was Tata's answer, a genuinely small four-wheeled truck with a 0.7-litre two-cylinder diesel, priced close enough to a three-wheeler that the arithmetic worked for an owner-driver, and stable and weatherproof in a way three-wheelers were not.

Design and engineering

It sold in extraordinary numbers and created a segment other manufacturers then rushed to enter. For many buyers it was the first vehicle they had owned, financed against the earnings it would generate, and it became the standard unit of last-mile distribution for everything from milk to construction materials across the country.

In production

Tata has kept developing it, adding a 1.4-litre four-cylinder diesel, passenger and pickup variants, and an electric version with a rear-mounted motor aimed at urban delivery fleets. Two decades on it remains one of the company's highest-volume products, and one of the clearest examples of a vehicle designed around an economic case rather than a specification.
