The Sumo arrived in 1994 as a plain, tall, ladder-framed people carrier, named in tribute to Sumant Moolgaokar, the engineer who had shaped Telco into India's dominant truck maker. It was not sophisticated. It was a boxy five-door with a diesel engine, rear- or four-wheel drive, a five-speed manual and enough seats to make it viable as shared transport.

That was exactly what the market wanted. Indian roads outside the cities punished cars and rewarded ground clearance and simple mechanicals, and the Sumo became a fixture of taxi fleets, government departments, police forces and rural operators, with engines ranging from a Peugeot-derived 1.9 diesel up to Tata's own 3.0-litre units.

It stayed in production until 2019, long past the point where it could meet contemporary expectations for safety or emissions. The Sumo Grande tried to modernise the concept and the Harrier eventually took over the space, but neither replicated the original's role as basic, durable transport for people who had few alternatives.
