Origins

Ratan Tata set the brief himself: a car with the interior space of an Ambassador, the running costs of a Maruti 800 and the price of a Zen. Tata Motors had never designed a passenger car before, and doing it meant building the engineering capability from scratch, with styling help from Italy and a new plant at Pune. The Indica went on sale in 1998 and took a very large number of bookings before anyone had driven one.

Design and engineering

Early cars had quality problems severe enough to threaten the whole project, and Tata reworked the car substantially into the V2 version, which sold in genuine volume and became a mainstay of Indian taxi fleets. Its diesel engine and roomy cabin made it cheap to run and easy to fill, which was the entire proposition.

In production

The export chapter went badly. MG Rover, short of a small car, imported the Indica and sold it in Britain as the CityRover at a price that invited comparison with cars it could not match, and the reviews were brutal. It damaged both companies' reputations without helping either.

Legacy

What the Indica actually achieved was internal. It gave Tata a passenger car business, an engine family and a design organisation, and everything from the Nano to the Nexon depends on the capability built to make it. Production ran until 2018, with the Bolt and Tiago succeeding it.
