Origins

Toyota spent two decades arguing that hybrids were the sensible bridge technology and was slower than most of the industry to commit to battery-electric cars. The bZ4X, in production from April 2022, was the first product of that commitment: a compact crossover on the e-TNGA architecture developed with Subaru, which sells a near-identical twin as the Solterra. It offers front-motor front-wheel drive or a dual-motor all-wheel-drive version, and it is built in Japan, China and, since 2025, Indonesia.

Design and engineering

The launch went wrong almost immediately. Toyota recalled the car within weeks of deliveries beginning because wheel hub bolts could loosen, in the worst case allowing a wheel to come off, and asked owners to stop driving while a fix was developed. It bought back some cars. Reviewers were also unimpressed by the charging speed and the real-world range relative to competitors.

In production

Toyota has since revised the car substantially and the bZ naming has expanded into a family. The awkwardness of the first attempt is the more interesting part of the story: a company with an unmatched reputation for launching products that work found that starting again on a new powertrain is harder than it looks.
