The Camry began in March 1982 as a narrow-body front-wheel-drive compact, replacing the Celica Camry, and grew into something more significant when Toyota widened it in 1991 for the American market. That wide-body car, built in Georgetown, Kentucky, hit a moment when domestic mid-size saloons were losing buyers on quality and Toyota's reputation for building things that did not break was at its peak.

What followed was a very long run at the top of the American sales charts, where the Camry has been the best-selling passenger car for most years since the late 1990s. It achieved this by being deliberately uncontroversial: quiet, roomy, reliable, cheap to insure and unlikely to surprise anyone. Reviewers have spent decades calling it boring, which has never made any difference to buyers who wanted a car and not a conversation.

The Camry was also the vehicle through which Toyota's American manufacturing argument was made. Building it in Kentucky with American workers, and supplying Japan and other markets from that plant, defused a good deal of the political friction over Japanese imports in the 1980s and 1990s, and made the Camry difficult to characterise as a foreign car.

Toyota has occasionally pushed against the image, with V6 versions, a TRD variant and sharper styling on recent generations, and it added hybrid powertrains that now dominate the range. The Camry has also carried Toyota's flag in NASCAR stock car racing in the United States, a connection that has nothing to do with the road car but a good deal to do with how it is marketed there. It remains in production and is built in more countries than most people realise.
