Origins

The 452 arrived in the mid-1960s as a reworked 450, with a more powerful engine and a revised front end, and it has been in continuous production at Ulyanovsk ever since — a run that has outlasted the state that commissioned it. Russians call it the bukhanka, the loaf of bread, for the obvious reason; in ambulance trim it is the tabletka, the pill.

Design and engineering

The specification has barely moved. A petrol four sits between the front seats, driving all four wheels through a part-time transfer case; the axles are live, the springs are leaf, and the body is a slab-sided box with a flat floor. It is loud, thirsty, slow and cold, and none of that has mattered against the things it does well: it goes where nothing else with a roof will go, it can be repaired at the roadside, and it costs very little.

In production

As a result it became the default vehicle of Siberia, the Russian far north and the former Soviet republics — ambulance, minibus, fire tender, military transport, mobile workshop, expedition vehicle. Modern versions have gained fuel injection, disc brakes and, eventually, seatbelts, but the shape and the concept have not changed since Khrushchev was in office. Very few vehicles anywhere have been in production for so long with so little revision, and none of them was designed with less concern for how it looked.
