Origins

The Patriot, launched in 2005, was UAZ's move into the full-size SUV market that Russian buyers were increasingly filling with used imports. It developed from the Simbir line and offered what a Land Cruiser offered — a five-door body, five seats, high driving position, selectable four-wheel drive — at a fraction of the price.

Design and engineering

Underneath, the engineering was familiar Ulyanovsk practice: a ladder frame, live axles front and rear, and a part-time transfer case with low range. That made it genuinely capable off road and fairly unpleasant on it, a trade-off the factory has never shown much interest in renegotiating.

In production

It has been updated steadily over two decades — ZMZ petrol engines, Italian and Polish diesels, a GM-sourced four, and from the late 2010s a six-speed automatic — and spawned a double-cab pickup. It remains UAZ's flagship and the only vehicle in the range designed after the Soviet Union ended.
