01

Origins

The GAZ-69 had been the Soviet army's light utility since the early 1950s, and by the late 1960s it was overdue. The UAZ-469, designed under Albert Rakhmanov and in production from 1971, replaced it: a four-door open-bodied 4x4 with a canvas or hard top, a 2.4-litre petrol four, leaf-sprung live axles and part-time four-wheel drive.

Design and engineering

Its distinguishing feature was underneath. The military version used gear-reduction final drives in the wheel hubs, which raised the axle centreline relative to the wheel centre and produced ground clearance far beyond what the suspension travel alone would suggest. Combined with short overhangs and a low first gear, it made the 469 capable of terrain that required specialist equipment elsewhere.

In production

For most of its life it was not something a Soviet citizen could buy. Production went to the military, to collective farms, to the fire and medical services and to officials, and civilians encountered it as a taxi in places where roads gave out. It was renamed UAZ-3151 in the mid-1980s under the standardised Soviet numbering scheme, and assembled under licence or from kits in a scattering of countries from Cuba to Azerbaijan.

Legacy

It has never really stopped being made. The Hunter of 2003 is the same vehicle modernised, and the basic architecture — ladder frame, live axles, upright body — remains in production at Ulyanovsk more than fifty years after launch.

The facts that define it.
