Origins
The Unimog 406 of 1963 became the range's backbone: a larger, stronger generation with the OM312-family diesel, serving two decades of municipal, agricultural, military and forestry duty across dozens of variants. Its cab shape is the Unimog most people picture; its survivors constitute a global enthusiast economy of restorations and worksite veterans. The 406's balance — genuinely useful power, unstoppable geometry, implement universality — fixed the type's classic form. Wörth's modern giants descend from it directly. For collectors and councils alike, the 406 era remains the reference: when the universal machine was at its most universally sized. Councils and collectors bid against each other for the same machines, which says everything. Its parts commonality across decades made it the rare machine cheaper to keep than to retire.
