Origins

The Unimog 421 of 1966 offered the concept in compact form: a lighter series alongside the 406, sized and priced for smaller farms, municipalities and export markets that needed Unimog capability without full-scale mass. The same portal-axle, implement-carrying architecture applied at reduced scale kept the family's promise intact. Long production through the 1980s seeded the type across continents. The 421 demonstrates the range-logic that sustained the Unimog across eighty years — never one machine but a spectrum, each point defensible — and its survivors remain the accessible entry into the cult, half tractor, half truck, entirely beloved. Smaller purses, same religion. African missions and Andean farms took thousands, where its size fitted both the tracks and the budgets.
