Origins
The Unimog 401 of 1953 marked Mercedes-Benz's full adoption: production moved to Gaggenau, the three-pointed star went on the bonnet, and the universal machine entered its industrial maturity. Diesel power, portal-axle ground clearance and implement mounts served farms, municipalities and the young Bundeswehr's needs alike. The 401 generation spread the concept worldwide — vineyards, alpine roads, expedition history — establishing the cult that collects and works these machines still. In the Unimog's long genealogy the 401 is the consolidation chapter: the moment Daimler decided the strange agricultural crossbreed was a permanent member of the family. The strange crossbreed became the family's most loyal member. Alpine communes that bought them new have restored them twice rather than replace the capability.
