Origins

XEV, an Italian-Chinese startup, delivered the Yoyo in 2021 as a manufacturing argument: much of the microcar's low-stress bodywork was 3D-printed, compressing tooling costs and enabling rapid variation, while swappable batteries — exchanged in minutes at partner stations — addressed urban charging's inconvenience. Classified as a heavy quadricycle for European rules, the two-seater targeted Italian cities' ZTL zones, subsidised sharing fleets and licence-limited young drivers. Production in China met design in Turin. The Yoyo's significance exceeds its niche: it productionised two ideas — additive manufacturing and battery swapping — that the mainstream industry kept declaring imminent, and did so at the market's smallest, most forgiving scale. The future often arrives first in microcars.
