Origins

The G9 was meant to be XPeng's move upmarket: a mid-size five-door SUV launched in 2022 with a rear motor or dual motors, air suspension, and an 800-volt silicon-carbide electrical architecture that allowed charging rates well ahead of most rivals — the fastest-charging production SUV in China on the company's claim at launch.

Design and engineering

The launch itself went badly wrong. XPeng offered the car in a tangle of trims and option packs that made it almost impossible for buyers to work out what they were getting, and the reaction was severe enough that the company rewrote the entire range within days. The episode became a case study in China's EV press and prompted a broader reorganisation inside XPeng.

In production

The car recovered. A 2024 revision simplified the line-up and cut prices, and the G9 became the basis for XPeng's European push, with assembly by Magna Steyr in Graz for the continent. Volkswagen's subsequent decision to take a stake in XPeng and co-develop vehicles on its platforms was, in part, a judgement on the architecture underneath this car.
