Origins
Shown at Villa d'Este in 2015, the Mostro honoured the fearsome Maserati 450S 'Monster' of 1957: Zagato built a short series — five coupés — around a Maserati V8 set front-mid in a carbon monocoque, with a sequential gearbox and bodywork of deliberately brutal simplicity, all haunch and snout. There was no pretence of practicality; the Mostro was a collector's object about racing memory, sold before it was shown, in the modern Zagato manner. A companion roadster series followed years later. Cars like this are what the great carrozzeria became once mass coachbuilding died — an atelier issuing small editions that argue Italian body-making remains an art. As arguments go, a monster wearing the trident and the Z is persuasive.
