Origins

After Daewoo's 1998 joint venture with ZAZ, the Korean Lanos became the Zaporizhzhia plant's lifeline: assembled locally in growing depth — eventually with welding and painting on site — and sold as the Daewoo, then ZAZ Lanos at prices that made it independent Ukraine's default new car for over a decade. Taxi fleets ran little else; the humble three-box shape became part of the street furniture from Kyiv to Odesa. The arrangement traded prestige for survival, keeping one of the old Soviet system's great factories working through years that closed many others, and teaching it modern production standards along the way. Output continued, latterly with ZAZ's own engines, into the 2010s. The Lanos is thus Ukrainian industrial history in the plainest possible costume.
