Origins

The sixth-generation car arrived in the Mustang's fiftieth anniversary year with two changes that mattered more than its styling. It finally got independent rear suspension, ending a decades-old argument, and it was engineered from the start for right-hand drive and for markets that had previously only seen grey imports. Ford began selling the Mustang officially across Europe, Asia and Australia, and for several years it was the best-selling sports coupe in the world.

Design and engineering

Kemal Curić's exterior lowered and widened the shape without abandoning the retro cues; the interior, by Sewon Chun and Michael Thomson, was the first that could stand comparison with a German coupe. The engine range spanned a turbocharged 2.3-litre EcoBoost four, a V6 that lasted only to 2017, and the 5.0-litre Coyote V8.

In production

The Shelby derivatives defined the generation. The GT350 used a 5.2-litre flat-plane-crank V8, an unusual choice for an American V8 and one that gave the car a high-revving, European voice. The GT500 that followed used a supercharged version of the same block with a dual-clutch gearbox, and was the most powerful road car Ford had built. Production at Flat Rock ran to April 2023, by which point the Mustang was outliving both of its traditional rivals.
