Brand History

The Mercury Story

Mercury was created in 1938 by Edsel Ford to fill the price gap between mainstream Ford models and luxury Lincolns. The 1949 Mercury Eight became an icon of American custom car culture, and later models such as the Cougar gave the brand a performance image. Squeezed by declining sales and overlap with Ford's own lineup, the marque was gradually wound down.
