01

Origins

Grand Marquis arrived in 1975 as the plushest version of the Mercury Marquis, and by 1983 it had taken over the model line entirely. From then until 2011 it did one thing: body-on-frame, rear-drive, V8-powered full-size sedan for people who wanted exactly that and nothing else.

Design and engineering

What it became was the Panther, the platform it shared with the Ford Crown Victoria and Lincoln Town Car and one of the last of its kind in North America. The formula barely changed after the 1979 downsizing. A live rear axle, a bench or split-bench front seat, a trunk that swallowed everything, and a ride tuned for interstate miles rather than corners. Fleet buyers, taxi operators and retirees kept it alive long after every competitor had moved to unibody front-wheel drive.

In production

That loyalty was also the trap. By the 2000s the Grand Marquis was selling on inertia to an audience shrinking every year, and Mercury had little else to offer. When Ford closed the St. Thomas plant in Ontario in 2011, the Panther line went with it, and Mercury followed within months. It was the last mainstream American sedan built the way they had all once been built.
