Origins
By the late 1930s Ford had a problem in the middle of its range. The Ford DeLuxe sat at the bottom and the Lincoln-Zephyr at the top, and General Motors was picking off buyers in between with Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Buick. Edsel Ford created a new marque to fill it, and the Mercury Eight, launched for 1939, was the whole of that marque's product line.
