Origins

Ford handed Mercury the Mustang's platform in 1967 and told the division to make it grown-up. The result rode on a longer wheelbase than the Mustang, hid its headlights behind vacuum-operated covers, and came only with V8s at launch: a pony car with the sharp edges filed off. It worked. The Cougar sold strongly, took Motor Trend's Car of the Year, and gave Mercury an identity beyond rebadged Fords for the first time in years.

Design and engineering

Then it kept moving. By 1974 the pony car market had collapsed and the Cougar was reinvented as a personal luxury coupe on the intermediate platform, sharing its bones with the Ford Thunderbird. Through the late seventies the name spread across a whole mid-size range, sedans and wagons included, before contracting back to a coupe. The 1983 car, with its aero fastback roof and later turbocharged and supercharged options, was the closest the badge came to being a sports coupe again.

In production

The last act was the strangest. After a two-year gap the name returned in 1999 on a front-wheel-drive sport compact built off the Ford Contour, styled in Ford's New Edge language and aimed at buyers who might otherwise have bought a Japanese coupe. It was a decent car with almost nothing in common with what came before, and it lasted three seasons.

Legacy

Over thirty years the Cougar was a pony car, a land yacht, a wagon, an aero coupe and a hatchback. The badge outlived every definition Mercury attached to it.
