Brand History

The Škoda Story

Škoda Auto traces its origins to 1895, when cyclist Václav Klement and mechanic Václav Laurin founded Laurin & Klement in Mladá Boleslav, building bicycles, then motorcycles, and from 1905 automobiles. The firm was acquired in 1925 by the Škoda Works engineering conglomerate in Pilsen, taking the Škoda name and winged-arrow emblem. Nationalized after World War II, it produced popular models such as the rear-engined Škoda 1000 MB behind the Iron Curtain, and after 1991 was progressively acquired by Volkswagen, under which it transformed into a major European volume brand with models like the Octavia and Fabia.

  1. 1895–1925

The company operated as Laurin & Klement, using emblems based on the founders' initials, including laurel-wreath badges with the L&K monogram.

  2. 1926–1990

After the Škoda Works takeover, the now-famous winged arrow appeared: an arrow with three feathers and a circular "eye" inside a ring, commonly rendered in blue and later in other colorways. Its precise symbolism is debated, but it is often read as representing speed, progress, and vision.

  3. 1991–2011

Under early Volkswagen-era branding, the winged arrow was rendered in green within a black ring bearing the ŠKODA name, with green symbolizing environmental awareness.

  4. 2011–2022

A refreshed emblem introduced a more sculpted, chrome-edged winged arrow in brighter green, with the wordmark separated from the badge on vehicles.

  5. 2022–present

Škoda adopted a flat, minimalist identity: a two-dimensional wordmark and simplified winged-arrow symbol in "Emerald" green with "Electric" green accents, designed for digital use.
