Origins

The Fabia replaced the Felicia in 1999 as Škoda's smallest car, and it was the first supermini the company built entirely on Volkswagen Group foundations, sharing its platform with the Seat Ibiza and the Volkswagen Polo. Like the Octavia above it, it traded on space and value: a B-segment hatchback that felt a class larger inside, with a hatchback, saloon and estate body over successive generations.

Design and engineering

It sold steadily rather than spectacularly, and gave Škoda a presence in the volume small-car market across Europe. A vRS version with a turbodiesel — an unusual choice for a hot supermini — became a cult car for its economy and mid-range torque.

In production

Where the Fabia became genuinely significant was in rallying. Škoda Motorsport built the Fabia S2000 and then, from 2015, the Fabia R5, a four-wheel-drive customer rally car sold to private teams. The R5 and its successor the Rally2 became the most widely used cars in national and regional championships worldwide and dominated the WRC2 category, giving Škoda a competition record out of all proportion to its road-car image and making the Fabia badge more familiar on a stage than in a showroom.
