Origins

The Octavia of 1996 was the first Škoda designed from scratch under Volkswagen ownership, and it set the pattern the company has followed ever since. It used the Volkswagen A4 platform — shared with the Golf IV, Audi A3 and Seat León — but stretched it, and clothed it in a five-door liftback body with a boot considerably larger than any of its German relatives could offer. An estate followed.

Design and engineering

The proposition was almost insultingly simple: the same engineering as a Golf, more space, a lower price, and a name revived from a Škoda of the 1950s. Buyers who had been trained to regard the brand as a punchline found nothing to object to, and fleets did the arithmetic quickly. It became the taxi, driving school and police car of choice across large parts of Europe.

Škoda then found the model had range. The vRS versions, using Volkswagen Group turbocharged engines, turned the practical liftback into a genuinely quick car at a price no hot hatch could match, and the 4x4 estate versions gave it reach into markets that needed traction. The Octavia also went rallying in WRC and later dominated customer motorsport in other forms.

Legacy

Successive generations have kept the formula intact, and the Octavia has been Škoda's best-selling model and the foundation of its profitability for nearly three decades — the clearest demonstration in the industry of what shared platforms can do for a brand that knows exactly which customer it is talking to.
