01

Origins

Alpine spent its first seventy years making small, light sports cars. The A390 is a five-door coupe SUV, which tells you how much the economics of the business have changed.

Design and engineering

It is fully electric, with three motors - one at the front, two at the rear - giving all-wheel drive and torque vectoring across the rear axle, driving through a single fixed gear. That layout is the interesting part: rather than treating a tall car as an inevitable compromise, Alpine has used the individual rear motors to shuffle torque from side to side, which is a more direct way of making something heavy change direction than any suspension trick.

In production

Production begins in 2026 at Dieppe, the same site that built the A106, and the car is the volume model on which Alpine's expansion into a full electric marque depends. Whether a crossover can carry a badge earned on Monte Carlo special stages is the question the company has chosen to answer in public.
