Origins
The Atom, developed from Niki Smart's student design and produced by Simon Saunders' tiny Somerset firm from 2000, discarded everything nonessential — including bodywork: its bronze-welded tubular frame was the car, exposed like an anatomical drawing, with two seats and a mid-mounted Honda four slung within. At under 500 kilograms, even modest power delivered violence; supercharged versions rearranged passengers' faces in a Top Gear segment that became one of motoring television's immortal clips. Successive generations refined without softening — the recipe holding through Atom 4's turbocharged Civic Type R engine. Built by a handful of craftsmen, each car signed by its assembler, the Atom made Ariel the model boutique constructor: a global reputation resting on the honest delivery of pure, unfiltered acceleration.
