Launched in 2000 to replace the Credos, the first Optima shared its structure with the Hyundai Sonata and set out to compete on price rather than character. It was a competent front-wheel-drive family saloon in a segment full of them, and for two generations it sold on warranty length and equipment count. Kia used the K5 name at home and the Optima name in most export markets.

The third generation, launched in 2010, was the car that changed how the company was perceived outside Korea. Styled under Peter Schreyer, it had a long bonnet, a fast roofline and a chrome window graphic that made it look considerably more expensive than it was. Reviewers who had spent years describing Kia saloons as sensible started describing them as handsome. It arrived at the moment when American buyers were reconsidering the mid-size segment, and it sold in numbers no previous Optima had approached.

Subsequent generations kept the design-first approach, adding hybrid and plug-in hybrid options as the segment shrank under pressure from crossovers. In 2020 Kia dropped the Optima name globally and standardised on K5, arriving with a wide grille treatment, an available all-wheel-drive layout and a turbocharged GT version. It is now one of the few mid-size saloons its makers still consider worth developing.
