01

Origins

Hyundai had never built an SUV when the Santa Fe went on sale in June 2000, and it did not build one then either, in the traditional sense. The car used the Sonata's front-wheel-drive platform with optional all-wheel drive, which meant it rode and steered like a saloon and had no off-road pretensions worth the name. That was exactly what the American market was starting to want.

Design and engineering

The styling, developed at Hyundai's California studio, was strange: heavily flared arches, a sloping tail and cladding that reviewers struggled to like. Buyers did not care. It arrived precisely as the crossover boom began, priced well below the established competition and covered by Hyundai's long warranty, and it sold far beyond the company's projections. For a manufacturer whose profitability had been thin and whose reputation in America was still recovering from the Excel, it was the model that changed the arithmetic.

Later generations grew into the mid-size class with three rows of seats, moved production to Montgomery, Alabama, and added hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. The 2023 redesign abandoned the soft shapes entirely for an upright boxy body, an unusually confident move for a car that sells in these numbers.
