Origins
ARO's lineage began with licence-influenced military 4x4s at Câmpulung, and the M461 series — successor to the first IMS models of 1957 — became the Romanian army's standard light off-roader through the 1960s: rugged, simple, agricultural in every complimentary sense, with petrol fours driving all wheels through proper transfer gearing. Export sales to fellow socialist states and beyond began the marque's improbable international career. Peasant-proof engineering was the design brief and the achievement; comfort awaited later models. The M461 established Câmpulung's competence and clientele, setting up the 24 Series that would take Romanian off-roaders to seventy countries. It remains the founding patriarch of one of the Eastern Bloc's few genuine export successes.
