Origins

The Montego arrived in April 1984 as the three-box companion to the Maestro hatchback, sharing structure and engines with it and taking over from the Morris Ital and Austin Ambassador in the fleet-dominated middle of the British market. Roy Axe's design team reworked an inherited shape late in its development, producing something neat if not memorable, with a well-proportioned estate that arrived shortly afterwards.

Design and engineering

Engines were the S-series and O-series petrol fours, later joined by Perkins-built diesels, and the MG Montego Turbo was genuinely quick by the standards of mid-1980s saloons. Against that, early cars suffered electrical faults and inconsistent assembly, and the synthesised voice warning system shared with the Maestro became a national joke almost immediately.

In production

The estate was the version that earned its keep, big and practical and kept in production until December 1994, long after the saloon's fleet appeal had drained away. The Rover 600 and 400 took over the segment, badged for a company that no longer wanted to be called Austin.
