Origins

Chrysler came out of its federal loan guarantee needing something nobody else sold. Lee Iacocca and Hal Sperlich had pushed the idea of a small front-drive van at Ford and been refused; at Chrysler they finally got to build it. The Caravan arrived for 1984 on a stretched version of the front-wheel-drive K-car platform, and that choice settled everything. With the engine mounted transversely and driving the front wheels, there was no propshaft tunnel, so the floor could sit low and flat, and the roof could stay under the height of a suburban garage door.

Design and engineering

Those two dimensions were the whole argument. Earlier vans were converted commercial vehicles that you climbed up into; the Caravan was a vehicle you stepped into, with three rows of seats, removable rear benches, a side sliding door and the manners of a large hatchback. It was sold alongside the near-identical Plymouth Voyager, and from 1992 an all-wheel-drive version was offered for buyers in snow country. The stretched Grand Caravan, added a few years in, became the version most families actually bought.

In production

Every competitor spent the following decade copying the format, and the American station wagon quietly died. Chrysler kept pushing the segment forward with features aimed squarely at parents, most influentially the Stow 'n Go seats that folded flat into the floor rather than needing to be wrestled out to the kerb. Windsor Assembly in Ontario built the thing for its entire life, from November 1983 until the last one on 21 August 2020 — thirty-six years on essentially one idea.

Legacy

By the end the Grand Caravan had become a rental-fleet fixture more than a family aspiration, and Chrysler split the succession: the Journey took the short-wheelbase slot, while the Grand Caravan name in Canada gave way to the Chrysler Voyager. The minivan itself never went away. It just stopped being remarkable, which is the clearest evidence of how completely the Caravan won.
