Origins
BMW came late to the tall car and arrived with a chip on its shoulder. Rather than build a rugged off-roader, the company engineered a road car with ground clearance and marketed it under an invented label — Sports Activity Vehicle — to make clear it was not competing with a Land Rover in a bog. The engineering backed the slogan up: a monocoque rather than a separate chassis, car-derived suspension, and steering and body control tuned to the standards of BMW's saloons rather than its rivals' trucks.
