The Alero replaced the Achieva in 1999 as Oldsmobile's entry-level compact, sold as a coupe and a saloon on the General Motors N-body shared with the Pontiac Grand Am. Engines were the corporate four-cylinders and the 3.4-litre V6, with automatic transmissions in most cars, and Dave Lyon's design gave it a crisper, more European look than its predecessor. Reviewers found it decent and unremarkable, which was the intention.

Its place in history was decided elsewhere. General Motors announced in December 2000 that it would shut Oldsmobile down, and the Alero was the model still in production when the time came. The last one left the Lansing plant on 29 April 2004, signed by the workers who built it, ending 107 years of the oldest surviving American car marque.
