01

Origins

The Seagull went on sale in China in April 2023 as a small five-door hatchback in the A-segment, styled under Wolfgang Egger's team with a sharp, upright face that looks more expensive than the car is, and it replaced the earlier e1 at the bottom of BYD's range.

Design and engineering

Its significance is entirely about cost. Priced below almost every petrol supermini in its own market, with a Blade battery, a usable real-world range for city driving, and a level of fit and finish that surprised the engineers who took one apart, it landed at the exact moment Western manufacturers were arguing that affordable electric cars were years away. Several teardown analyses of the Seagull circulated through the industry, and the conclusions were uncomfortable: the savings came from vertical integration, cell chemistry and ruthless part-count reduction rather than from any single trick that could be copied quickly.

In production

A second-generation car moved up into the supermini class, and export versions are sold under the Dolphin Mini and Dolphin Surf names in Latin America and Europe at higher prices. Whatever it is badged, it is the car most often cited when people argue about what Chinese manufacturing has actually achieved.
