Origins

Lincoln's Navigator arrived in 1997 and sold immediately, and Cadillac had nothing to answer it with. Rather than wait for a proper design, General Motors took the GMC Yukon Denali, changed the grille, the badges and the trim, and put the Escalade on sale for the 1999 model year in a development programme measured in months rather than years. Critics said exactly what you would expect, and buyers bought it anyway.

Design and engineering

The second generation, from 2002, was the one that mattered. It was properly differentiated, far more powerful, and it landed in the middle of a cultural moment — appearing constantly in hip-hop videos, on athletes' driveways and in film, until the name carried more weight in popular culture than anything else Cadillac made. General Motors extended it into the long-wheelbase ESV and the pickup-bodied EXT, and later added a hybrid version.

In production

What the Escalade really did was fix Cadillac's economics. A full-size body-on-frame SUV built on existing truck architecture and sold at luxury-car prices generates margins no sedan can match, and for two decades the Escalade underwrote much of the division. Every subsequent generation has escalated the interior rather than the mechanicals — the current car's curved OLED dashboard runs most of the width of the cabin — and an all-electric IQ version now sits alongside it.

Legacy

It is not a car anyone at Cadillac planned to build, and it remains the company's most recognisable product.
