Origins

Audi showed the TT as a coupé concept at Frankfurt in 1995, drawn largely at its California studio, with a roadster following months later. Concepts like it were normally diluted into production; this one was not. What arrived in 1998 kept the circles, the dome, the truncated tail, the exposed aluminium fuel filler cap and the visible fasteners, and looked like nothing else on sale.

Design and engineering

Underneath it was a Volkswagen Golf, sharing the Mk4 platform, its transverse engines and its front-wheel-drive layout, with quattro available above. Purists complained; buyers did not, because the interior was the best-executed thing Audi had built, with knurled aluminium fittings and a stripped-back geometry that dragged the rest of the industry's cabin design after it.

In production

The early cars had one serious problem. Several high-speed accidents in Germany were traced to lift-off instability, and in 1999 Audi recalled them to fit a small rear spoiler, revise the suspension and standardise stability control. The fix worked and the reputation recovered. Three generations were built at Győr in Hungary, the second on a partly aluminium structure and the third introducing Audi's all-digital Virtual Cockpit instrument display. Production ended in November 2023 with no direct successor, the market for small sports coupés having quietly disappeared beneath it.
