01

Origins

By the early 1970s Cadillac had a problem it had never faced: affluent American buyers were choosing Mercedes-Benz, and doing so in cars that were shorter, tighter and cost more than a de Ville. The Seville, launched in spring 1975 as a 1976 model, was the answer — a Cadillac that was smaller than the rest of the range and priced above almost all of it.

Design and engineering

Engineering it quickly meant starting from a modest base: a heavily reworked version of the compact GM platform underneath the Chevrolet Nova, stiffened, re-suspended and fitted with electronic fuel injection. The body, crisp and upright with sharp edges and no excess, was among the best-resolved American designs of the decade, and it read as expensive in a way the bloated full-size cars no longer did. Buyers accepted the logic and the Seville sold well from the start.

In production

The second generation, from 1980, was braver and far more divisive. It switched to front-wheel drive and adopted a razor-edged sloping tail modelled on prewar British coachwork — the so-called bustleback. Opinion split immediately, and mechanical troubles made it worse: the standard Oldsmobile diesel V8 and the optional V8-6-4 both damaged Cadillac's reputation badly enough that the effects lingered for years.

Legacy

Later Sevilles moved to a transverse layout and, from 1992, to a genuinely competitive shape with the Northstar V8, especially in the harder-edged STS form. It was the closest Cadillac had yet come to a credible European rival, but the name was retired in 2004 and the STS took over.
