By the mid-1970s BMW had a problem it could only solve by growing up. The 02 Series had rescued the company a decade earlier and given it a reputation for small, quick, honest saloons, but it was a 1960s design sold to buyers who now wanted comfort and status alongside pace. The replacement, launched in June 1975, was the first car to wear a name BMW still uses.

Paul Bracq gave the E21 a wedge-nosed two-door body with the shark-like front and forward-leaning kidney grille that fixed BMW's face for the next twenty years. Inside, the dashboard was angled towards the driver, a detail that became a house signature. Underneath it was conventional and well sorted: front engine, rear-wheel drive, four-cylinder M10 units of 1.6 to 2.0 litres at launch, four- or five-speed manuals with a three-speed ZF automatic option. Only two-door saloons were built, plus the full convertible conversion offered by the Stuttgart coachbuilder Baur, since BMW had no open car of its own.

The car became genuinely interesting in 1977, when the compact M20 six was dropped in. In 2.0 to 2.3-litre form it made the E21 the only car of its size and price with a smooth straight-six, and the fuel-injected top version was the enthusiast's choice and the ancestor of every fast small BMW since. North American buyers got the range from 1977 to 1983 under emissions-strangled specification, which is why the E21 has a milder reputation there than in Europe.

Production ran to December 1983, by which time BMW had proved that a premium compact could be a volume business. The E30 that replaced it added four doors, a factory convertible, an estate, all-wheel drive and the first M3 — all of it built on the market the E21 created.
