Origins

Hyundai had been assembling Ford Cortinas under licence and wanted to build something of its own, which in the early 1970s meant buying in every capability it lacked. In 1974 it recruited George Turnbull, formerly managing director of Austin Morris, along with a group of British engineers, to run the project. Italdesign, under Giorgio Giugiaro, styled the body. Mitsubishi supplied the engine and transmission under licence. Hyundai supplied the factory at Ulsan, the money and the intent.

Design and engineering

The result, shown at Turin in 1974 and in production from 1975, was a conventional rear-wheel-drive small saloon with crisp Giugiaro creases and nothing technically adventurous about it, which was exactly right. What mattered was that Korea now had a car designed for its own market and built domestically, at a time when the country had almost no automotive supplier base to draw on.

In production

Exports began quickly and unglamorously, first to Ecuador and other developing markets, then in 1984 to Canada, where the Pony undercut everything else on the market and sold in numbers that surprised Hyundai as much as anyone. It was never sold in the United States; that job fell to the front-wheel-drive Excel, which took its place along with the Elantra by 1990.

Legacy

Hyundai has since gone back to the car deliberately. A restored Pony concept was shown in 2021, and the pixel-block lighting and folded surfaces of the Ioniq 5 are explicit references to Giugiaro's original. For a company that spent decades being dismissed as a copyist, choosing its own first car as the heritage to mine is a pointed decision.
