Origins

The Born, named after the El Born district of Barcelona, is Cupra's first battery-electric car. It sits on Volkswagen Group's MEB platform and is built alongside the ID.3 at Zwickau in Germany, with the same rear-motor, rear-wheel-drive layout and battery options.

Design and engineering

What separates it is the tuning and the presentation. Cupra lowered and stiffened the suspension, added adaptive dampers and an electronic differential lock on the more powerful versions, and gave it faster steering — changes that turn a competent but soft hatchback into something genuinely enjoyable on a twisting road. Alberto Torrecillas's exterior is more angular and better resolved than the ID.3's, and the interior, with bucket seats and copper detailing, avoids the bareness that reviewers criticised in the Volkswagen.

In production

It was for a time the only MEB car most road testers described as fun to drive, which was Cupra's whole argument for existing as a brand. A hotter VZ version added significantly more power and a shorter final drive, and the model has been Cupra's main electric seller across Europe.
