Origins

Renault bought a controlling stake in Dacia in 1999. Its chairman, Louis Schweitzer, had been struck on a visit to Russia by how uncompetitive Western cars were against cheap local products, and set his engineers a target that sounded absurd inside a European car company: a modern, robust five-seat saloon selling for around €5,000.

Design and engineering

Hitting it meant a different engineering discipline. The Logan used the proven B0 platform and existing Renault engines and gearboxes, but every part was reviewed for cost: flat glass instead of curved, symmetrical mirrors, drastically reduced numbers of body pressings, simple electronics, and styling that prioritised cheap manufacture over fashion. There was no attempt to hide any of it. The car launched in Romania in 2004 and was intended for eastern Europe, north Africa and Latin America, not for France.

Western European buyers wanted it anyway. Faced with a new car with a warranty at the price of a three-year-old rival, a substantial number of customers decided that the missing equipment was not a sacrifice, and Renault found itself with demand it had not planned for. Dacia became a mainstream European brand on the strength of it.

Legacy

The Logan spawned an entire family — the MCV estate, the Sandero hatchback that became one of Europe's best-selling cars outright, the Duster SUV — and the low-cost model was exported to Renault's operations worldwide, sold as a Renault, a Nissan and a Lada in different markets. It reshaped Renault's economics more than any of its conventional products, and forced every mainstream manufacturer in Europe to work out an answer to a company that made money selling cars nobody else could build profitably.

The facts that define it.
