Origins

Renault bought Romania's Dacia in 1999 with a specific idea: build cars cheaply enough to sell in emerging markets, using engineering that had already been paid for elsewhere. The Logan saloon proved the theory. The Sandero was the hatchback that took it to Western Europe, sharing the Logan's platform, its simple front-engine front-drive layout and its policy of leaving out anything a buyer did not strictly need.

Design and engineering

It was launched in Brazil before Europe, which says something about who it was designed for. Deep, plain pressings kept the tooling cheap. Interior plastics were hard and unapologetic. Suspension was tuned long and soft for bad roads. What buyers got in return was a five-door family hatchback with proper luggage space at a price that undercut used cars from the segment above, backed by a mainstream dealer network and Renault's parts bin.

In production

The reception in the motoring press was cooler than the reception in the showrooms. Sandero owners consistently reported that the car did what they had asked of it, and the model became the backbone of Dacia's rise from a rescued state factory to one of the group's most profitable operations. Later generations moved onto Renault's modern small-car architecture and gained the equipment buyers had stopped regarding as optional — touchscreens, cruise control, LPG bi-fuel engines — without abandoning the original pitch.

Legacy

By the 2020s the Sandero had climbed to the top of Europe's registration charts, a position previously held by cars with far larger development budgets. Its lesson was uncomfortable for the rest of the industry: a large slice of the market had been buying complexity it never wanted.
